Sustainability PolicySeafood Holdings/ Daily Fish Supplies believes strongly in the ethical purchasing of fish supplies and, being one of the largest fresh fish specialists in the UK, understands our responsibility in supporting sustainable fishing. We work in close partnership with our suppliers to ensure all enterprises involved throughout the fishing and processing system, appreciate and work with our long-term objectives of sustaining fish stocks.
As a group we take very seriously our responsibility of protecting endangered species, and do not handle, process or distribute any fish listed on the critically endangered IUCN list, which includes bluefin tuna. We continue to strive to source and promote under-utilised species, such as albacore tuna, and help customers develop menus to maximise this knowledge.
We are proud to offer and supply on a daily basis a huge range of organic and MSC* certified products. These include organic atlantic salmon and sea trout and related products, MSC cod, haddock, mackerel, pacific salmon, pacific halibut to name but a few. Where possible we source from within the UK environmentally kind, sustainably cultivated products such as mussels and oysters and we also are able to offer local speciality products such as Anglesea farmed seabass.
Seafood Holdings/ Daily Fish Supplies work very closely with a number of companies whose prime goal is to offer ethically managed, environmentally sensitive produce. These range from prawns to hamachi yellowtail kingfish to seabass, and with reference to salmon, in addition to organic we offer ‘best practice’ as an alternative.
Products such as sea bass and bream are purchased from sustainable aquaculture centres, whose standards are to minimise or eliminate the key negative environmental and social impacts associated with aquaculture. The majority of yellowfin tuna purchased are fished in small, day fishing boats which practice traditional methods of hand-line fishing. This provides assurance that there is minimal environmental impact and no unwanted by-catch.
Seafood Holdings/ Daily Fish Supplies have always implemented a full traceability system, that in itself eradicates any possibility of any illegally caught fish entering the supply chain.
The World Wildlife Fund have recognised that should fish be removed from restaurant menus, prices will fall and fisherman will be forced to increase catches, compounding the negative impact. Seafood Holdings/ Daily Fish Supplies aim to remain focused on our purchasing and supply responsibilities and keep customers, chefs and consumers informed of issues that may affect their own purchasing decisions. Our aim is to meet the needs of our customers today whilst protecting our natural resources for tomorrow.
*The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an independent, non-profit organisation that certifies and promotes sustainable fisheries.
